Bengals' season has bright spots
By Mario LaBeach

There was great hope and expectations for the Buffalo State College men's basketball team, as well as the Lady Bengals, this year. They both lost in the State University of New York Athletic Conference quarterfinals Feb. 24.

But don't start weeping just yet, Bengal fans, the Bengals had several great accomplishments to be proud of this season: There were three Bengals named to the SUNYAC all-conference basketball teams Feb. 26 at the SUNYAC Basketball Championship Banquet in Utica, NY.

Senior guard Monique Hanks represented the Lady Bengals' on the ALL-SUNYAC First Team. In addition to that honor, Hanks became just the eighth women's basketball player in the school's 39 year history to score 1,000 career points. Hanks also became just the second player in Buffalo State history to finish their career reaching 1,000 points and 500 rebounds . She had 1,100 points and 641rebounds.

“I had a terrific time playing for Buffalo State,” she said. “I had a great career here and I am glad to know that I have become a part of the school's great basketball legacy.” Hanks said.

Hanks ranked in the top 10 for the SUNYAC in several different categories, including:

  • first in the conference with 3.69 steals per game
  • third in rebounding averaging 8.1
  • seventh in scoring with 13.3 points per game

The men's basketball team also had various accomplishments to be proud of this season. Seniors Perry Davis and Joshua Becker earned SUNYAC Men's Player of the Week honors this season.

Davis represented the Bengals as a second Team All- SUNYAC selection. He also ranked in the top 10 for the SUNYAC in several different categories, including:

  • third in conference steals, with 2.67 per game
  • third in rebounding, averaging 9.3
  • ninth in conference scoring with 15.3 points per game

“Joshua and I both had great seasons, it's just sad that it ended in the quarterfinals. I wish that we could have ended our careers on a winning note,” Davis said.

Becker also received SUNYAC Honorable Mentioning status because he finished fifth in the conference scoring, averaging 15.9 points per game. Becker also finished tenth on Buffalo State's all- time scoring list , finishing with 1,202 points. An even more impressive accomplishment considering he only played three seasons.

Both Bengals teams fell short in the SUNYAC race and failed to live up to their potential this season, but have several great memories and accomplishments from this pass season to look back on.
