It's time to put down that remote and get off the couch. The 7th Annual Bengal 5K Run and Fun Walk is coming to the Buffalo State College campus March 27 .
Come out and join faculty, staff, students and alumni and help raise money for scholarships. All proceeds will benefit the Legacy Scholarship Fund .
Legacy Scholarships are given to deserving students who are children or grandchildren of a BSC graduate. This $500 annual scholarship is given out to one eligible student per school year.
Registration is from 8-9 a.m . in the lobby of the Buckham Campus School on the BSC campus. The race will begin on Rockwell Road at 9:30 a.m. The post-race party will be in the Buckham school and will sport a variety of refreshments and food.
“We really do a good job at picking out the right sponsors for our post race party. We try to keep our party known as the ‘Popular Post Race Party',” said Jennifer Small, BSC Alumni Association race director.
New at the race will be a Champion Chip Timing system On the day of the race, a computer chip will be given out that corresponds to racers numbers. Accurate race results will be posted the same day at the post-race party.
Last year, the race attracted around 300 runners and walkers. This year, Small would love to see around 400 runners and walkers.
“If we had a day like last year, it will be a great turnout,” said Small. “I like to call it the fast, flat race.”
“I ran in the race last year. It was a lot of fun,” said Lori Garcea, a sophomore at BSC. “The race may seem long, but it actually doesn't take that long to complete. It is just a great way to get out of the house.”
An awards ceremony will be held to commemorate the top finishers in a variety of categories including:
- First male/female BSC student
- First male/female BSC alumni
- New Category : top overall male/female BSC faculty or staff member
- Team Category : any high school cross country or track team with the fastest overall time
Small is also looking for volunteers the day of the race. There are many positions to fill such as:
- Directing the race
- Mid-way stop
- Refreshment stops
- Start/finish line
On the day of the race, volunteers will be informed about what position is needed for them to attend. Volunteers usually begin at 7:30 a.m. and end at 12:30 p.m. “It is a morning commitment,” said Small. “We need a high volunteer support system. The more the merrier.”
