Attention all students who are looking to improve their lifestyle, body image, manage their anger, or just looking for support with a problem. Help can be found at the Buffalo State College Counseling Center.
The Counseling Center is providing counseling groups and workshops during the Spring 2004 semester to educate students on how to manage everyday emotional problems. This is a free and confidential service available to all Buffalo State students.
The workshops and groups include topics such as:
- healthy lifestyles: a four- part program designed to help you make healthy choices about alcohol and substance use.
- anger management workshop: focuses on helping the individual understand the emotion of anger and how to handle it. March 18 th and 25 th , 12:15- 1:30 p.m.; April 19 th and 26 th , 3- 4:30 p.m.
- body awareness/eating disorders group: a five- week psycho-educational support group for students who struggle with negative attitudes about their body and who have engaged in eating disorders or unhealthy eating. Feb. 24 th - Mar. 23 rd , 12:15- 1:30 p.m.
Although the Counseling Center provides these services each semester, Director Joan McCool is concerned that the students are not aware of them. McCool has come into contact with students who didn't even know that there was a counseling center on campus.
“An ideal number in a small group would be about seven or eight. For some of the workshops of course there could be more people,” she stated, “But we have run groups with as few as three people in them.”
The topics that are discussed during the workshops and group sessions are based on what the Counseling Center sees as a rising problem among the students.
“When we see students maybe with more eating concerns or anger and violence, we think, whoa, we better get some people together,” McCool said.
Any Student who would like to participate in any of the groups or workshops must register or have a one-on-one consultation with a counselor; depending on the group. This is so the counselor can know which group is best for the student and for confidentiality purposes. If one would like to participate, but is uncomfortable in a group setting, there are individual counseling services.
The groups and workshops will be held at the Counseling Center. For more information, or to sign up for the workshops or groups, call the Counseling Center at 878-4436, or go to the office on the second floor of Weigel Health Center.
