Student safety awareness on campus
By
Christina DeStefano Being safe on campus is something all students should be aware of. However, about 20 percent of students do not know what extreme measures are taken to keep them protected. Aside from school and learning, the main concern students should have is about their well-being on campus grounds.
Now a days with school and work taking up most of the time, worrying about safety may not be a big concern. Students may not be aware that what might be surrounding them may be what saves them from harm one day.
Besides handing out parking tickets, the Buffalo State University Police Department does more than what students think they do. They are sometimes stereotyped as being "just the security around campus" as said by Sarah Wilson, a junior.
Sam Lunetta, a UPD lieutenant would like students to know that the department is also there to make sure that students feel as safe as can be while on campus.
"One of the things the university police provide at Buffalo State is 24/7, 365-days-a-year protection for the campus community, students, staff and property,” said Lenetta. "We have full police status that is no different from the Buffalo Police."
The university police assist students on campus by offering pre-plans, which are classes that students can take to help them feel more secure about who they are and where they are. These pre-plans are offered by the education department program of the UPD.
Classes that can be taken by anyone part of Buffalo State College are:
- self defense
- domestic violence
- bias crimes
- alcohol and drugs
- DWI arrests
Students should also be aware of the Blue Light Telephone System that is on campus. This system lets students reach the university police from 36 different locations around campus. The blue light phones are located in parking lots, along roadways, on walkways, outside classroom buildings and residence halls, and also in the Butler Library.
Lunetta and the UPD want students to feel secure and know that the department is here to serve and protect all of Buff State.
