The industrial technology department continues to strive for excellence

Nadia S. Pizarro Technology is a field that is constantly growing and changing, creating profitable job opportunities. Those studying in the field must continually update their knowledge and skills. Buffalo State College's industrial technology department has made strides to provide their students with a program meeting the highest educational standards by consistent improvement and development. The National Association of Industrial Technology recently reaccredited this program until 2006.
According to Dr. Anthony J. Hotchkiss, professor and coordinator of the industrial technology program, BSC is the “only institution in New York state that is accredited by NAIT.”
The department offers two specialty concentration options:
- The manufacturing option focuses on direct manufacturing support.
“The knowledge of management principles, physical science, and liberal arts are employed to optimize manufacturing processes, materials and personnel,” says Hotchkiss.
- The quality option concentrates on teaching students how to continuously improve the level of quality in providing various products and services. The course work also includes a required professional internship with a local organization as a culminating activity.
It “prepares students to apply various improvement principals and techniques in the manufacturing and service industries,” Hotchkiss stated.

What this means for BSC students who receive a baccalaureate degree in either of the manufacturing or quality specialties is that they possess the proper credentials to take to employers or reputable graduate schools. When an association like NAIT accredits a degree it insures that the degree reflects strict guidelines. Schools that do not receive regional accreditation are sometimes viewed as inferior to those that do.
NAIT was formed in 1967 with the purpose of improving the curricula of industrial technology. Industrial technology is a field of study to prepare technical and technical management students for professional careers in business, education, industry and government. The standards set by NAIT ensure not only the highest quality curriculum, but also faculty knowledge and experience.
