When the idea of returning cans for a nickel
first came out, it seemed like everybody was enthused about
it. These days it’s hard to tell if the same enthusiasm
is still there.
Brian Schiess, a senior health and wellness major, says
he consumes a “fair amount” of beverages, but
chooses not to claim his 5-cent deposit.
“Maybe it’s because I’m a little bit lazy,
or the money that you get back from it is not worth it.
Plus we got a lotta bums in the area and we just set them
out on the corner and they take them,” Schiess said.
He used to return cans when he was living at home with his
family, and says he’s missing out on somewhere near
$25 per month by not returning them.
Louise Johnson, a junior Spanish major, says she gets about
$7 every two to three weeks from returning her cans.
“I usually spend the extra money at the super market
where I return the cans, on something else to drink or some
food,” said Johnson.
She thinks everyone should return their cans and recycle
for no other reason than to be good to the Earth.
“It’s obviously a good idea to return cans because
it’s better for the environment,” she said,
smiling.
