The Buffalo State College Foundation
wants to have a special night to support its honors program.
This will be made possible by the foundation having a scholarship
gala, with the evening event being called “A
Night in Nanjing.” This event will take place on April
5 at 7 p.m. in the Mildred Campbell Social Hall.
What is the purpose of the event?
This event is designed to raise money for the scholarship
fund and the college honors program, in which proceeds go
to over 125 students to assist in their tuition payment.
Fund-raising event coordinator Pam Voyer
thinks the sixth annual gala will be instrumental in bringing
the campus together for a good cause.
Tickets cost $175 each, with a portion going to the scholarship
fund and a portion going to the External Development office
on campus. Voyer said that last year’s gala raised
$85,000.
“It’s a way to cultivate and put everybody together
to understand why we’re here. We’re here for
the students because, ultimately, the college can’t
survive without the students…These are honor students
that go on and make us proud,” Voyer said.
Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost
Gary Marotta is one of many staff members who have
bought a table at the gala as a donation to the scholarship
fund. Dr. Marotta said that he will not be able to attend
the event himself this year, but stressed that the event
is “essential to student funding.” Voyer, who
is in her third yea in the External Development office at
BSC, anticipates at least 350 people coming to the event,
which is being held upstairs in the Student Union.
“A Night in Nanjing” is designed
to have a Chinese theme of decoration. Featured at the event
will be:
- a live auction
- sponsorships
- a group of musicians from the Buffalo Philharmonic
- dancing
- Asian performers playing live acoustic
music
- food catered by Oliver’s Restaurant
Who will be at the event?
Voyer said that the president, vice presidents, dean, chairs,
and some professors from the college will come to the event,
and that the corporate sector and philanthropic individuals
of the community who privately donate to the cause will also
be present.
Voyer also does an annual “Golf Classic” event
in October in addition to the gala in April.
Payroll deductions are also available for staff or faculty
members who wish to donate to the event. Marotta says “the
honors program here has been expanding in recent years, with
the gala being a big reason why.”
“Just bringing people in and getting to know more of
what happens on campus is a great networking thing…It’s
not only a fund-raiser, it’s also a friend-raiser,”
Voyer said.
