International Women’s Day conference

By Leslie Baer

Anyone who is interested in learning more about women’s rights is strongly encouraged to participate in International Women’s Day on March 8th. One way that those interested can participate is by attending the International Women’s Day conference at Buffalo State College in the Campbell Student Union Social Hall from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

The documentary, “Who’s Counting? Marilyn Waring on Sex, Lies, and Global Economics,” will be shown and discussed at the conference. This film “addresses the fact that the environment and millions lose out despite the growing global economy,” said Amitra Hodge, coordinator of the Women’s Studies program. Other panel presentations and discussions will include the following topics:

  • The unpaid and underpaid work of women
  • The under-funding of resources for women
  • The pervasiveness of these inequalities and the problems they cause
“The main purpose of this conference is to provide scholarship and dialogue to the campus community about issues dealing with equity,” said Hodge.

The keynote speaker will be Joanna Kerr, the executive director of the Association for Women’s Rights in Development (AWID). Her presentation is titled, “Making Women Count: International Strategies to Value Women and their Work”. Discussions will also be held by panelists Dr. Fred Floss, Dr. Susan Davis, Dr. Maggie Wright and Lauren Breen. Some of the topics they will be discussing are as follows:
  • Dr. Floss—How courts value women’s household services
  • Dr. Davis—Pay equity
  • Dr. Wright—A specific example of a case in Buffalo
  • Breen—The challenge of child care finance
“These speakers will focus on equity issues concerning women at the national and international level,” said Hodge.

Registration is required for those interested in participating in this event. It is free for students and $25 for all others. Students must register with Hodge at Classroom Building B323.
