On March 19 and 20, the SUNY
Training Center will hold a workshop on ArcGIS 8.2.
The first day of the workshop will give an explanation of
GIS and how it is used. On the second day, participants
will get hands-on experience with the program.
Stephen D. Smith, the GIS program leader for Cornell Institute
for Resource Information Systems, will be the instructor.
He has been working with ArcGIS for 15 years and says the
workshop is designed for individuals who have an interest
in or need to understand how ArcGIS works.
“Previous knowledge of geographic information systems
(GIS) is not necessary but familiarity with computers and
the MS Windows interface is helpful,” said Smith.
The ArcGIS program includes the following functions:
- integration with Internet map and data services
- geo-coding advanced editing tools, high-quality
cartography
- refined support for metadata
- wizard-driven menus
- direct read of more than 40 data formats
Jennifer
Landowski, a senior art education major, has never heard of
ArcGIS but says she would be interested in learning more about
the program.
“It would be nice to have a simple program that’s
easy and will let me get a nice view of what it is I’m
trying to see,” said Landowski.
