Students encouraged to join Casting Hall

By Christine Ball

Casting Hall is a student run organization that provides Buffalo State College students with the opportunity to be involved in all aspects of theater productions during a semester.

“Without Casting Hall there would be no theater program,” said Arianna Boykins, president of Casting Hall. Boykins is a sophomore theater major.

Boykins said the organization really gives students an opportunity to have hands- on experience with theater. There is great diversity within the organization and the faculty is very interactive with the students involved. Since

Buffalo State is a smaller campus compared to surrounding schools, students can really get involved with Casting Hall their freshman and sophomore years, instead of having to wait until they are juniors and seniors.

Right now Casting Hall is preparing for the production of Tartuffe, playing April 9 – 13. Students are involved in practice every night from 7:30 to 9:30, Monday through Thursday.
Casting Hall has also been asked to produce a play written by Tom Fontana, producer of HBO’s original series, “Oz.” Fontana will be teaching classes at Buffalo State next semester for majors in broadcasting, English and theater.

Anyone who is interested in any area of theater can join Casting Hall. Students are involved in ushering, publicity, set construction and technical needs.

“If we only had actors, we’d get nothing done,” said Boykins.

In order to be able to vote for board members for Casting Hall, students interested must complete 35 hours of volunteer work, including hanging up posters or ushering for productions. In order for a student to run for a board position, they must attend two- thirds of Casting Hall meetings.

Casting Hall is funded by the United Students Government and mandatory student activity fee. For more information about Casting Hall stop by TAB 204.
