Walk for Diabetes draws people of all ages

Walkers of all ages came out to the annual Walk for Diabetes March 9th in the Walden Galleria Mall in Cheektowaga. Children, parents, relatives, and supporters of people with diabetes came out to participate in one of several fund raisers and walks held by the American Diabetes Association.

“I’ve had diabetes now for 37 years so I’ve been a big supporter of any event that helps the cause,” said American Diabetes Association chairman James Horbowicz. “This is something that I am very passionate about.”

The walk consisted of three laps around the lower level of the mall, a total distance of about three miles. Walkers of all ages enjoyed sugar-free refreshments held before and after the race for all participants.

Although there weren’t any prizes given out for the best finishers of the walk, all participants received a free goodie bag with a water bottle and some sugar-free snacks inside. The walk wasn’t meant to be a race, and it was all for fun and good spirit to raise money for diabetes.

“It feels good just to know that we can help out just by walking,” said one of the Angola Angels 4 H’ers.

The walk also featured some Buffalo State College Organizations and students who participated in the event. The Alpha Sigma Tau sorority participated in the walk as part of one of its mandatory events.

“We participated in this walk the last couple years after one of our sisters found out she had diabetes,” said student Nicole Moretta. “Even though we started to do the walk for her, I think it makes us all feel good to know that we are doing something to help a lot of people with diabetes.”
