With the end of the Buffalo State College indoor track and field season, two BSC runners tested their speed at the NCAA Division III Championship at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. The meet wasn't up to expectations when freshman Mercedes Roper and sophomore Justin Muise didn't finish in the top five as expected.

Roper finished the season by running in the 55-meter dash. Clocking in at 7.34 seconds, she came in 12 th place out of 15 runners . She fell short by .11 in becoming an All-American runner. She would have been the first female runner is BSC history to receive this status in the track and field season. With a crushing time of 6.93, senior Diana Lawson from New Jersey City University came in first place. Just this past season, Roper broke two BSC records, with a time of 7.27 in the 55 and 26.59 in the 200. Both records were previously held since the 2003 season by Linda Williams.

Muise ran the 400-meter placing 11 th out of 13 with a time of 50.22 . Muise was fighting a sickness the day of the race that might have slowed his time. Muise missed being All-America by 1.08. Sophomore Nate Olson from Wisconsin La Crosse was the winner with a time of 47.93.

“I actually felt pretty sick Friday before the race. It was a disappointment but it was a learning experience,” said Muise.

Although Roper and Muise did not qualify in the top five as they hoped, they are still holding their heads up high. It was a prestigious meet where a lot of senior runners prevail. Jeff Ventura, BSC sports information director stated that they are young and talented and will prove themselves in the outdoor season.

Both runners were recognized as this weeks Athletes of the Week again. They were previously honored in February.

And not finishing in the top five Muise said, “Oh well, what are you going to do?” He also stated that he will try to go to the championship again in the outdoor season and prove that he can be in the top five.

Muise is keeping a positive attitude after the disappointment. He said, “I am looking forward to going back again for the outdoor nationals.”
