Where will you live next year?

Within the past two years, Buffalo State College has undergone a series of system and process changes. The first began in 2002 with a new audit system, Degree Navigator, which is a Web-enhanced way to audit data. Next was a new system of registration. Instead of waiting in long lines in the More Complex Lounge to register, Buffalo State College introduced the Sabre system of on-line registration and services in 2003.
This year, the college has introduced a new process for on-campus housing sign-up. The old process consisted of residents signing up for rooms on designated days in their dormitory or selected places with their resident assistants. Residents who wanted to remain in their current rooms had first pick on it unless told otherwise.
Selections for this year's room sign-up are based on a points system . Each resident has points based on a formula that consists of:
- cumulative GPA
- Buffalo State earned credits
- earned credits at other colleges
Students with the highest points will be the first to select their room for next year. Full apartment or suite sign-ups will be first, followed by full room sign-up then individual spaces within a room.
The system is new and untried and there are students who question it.
“If I'm paying to go to school, I shouldn't have somebody else determine when I get to pick my place to live,” stated transfer student Carl Jean-Louis. “It should be a first-come, first-serve basis because the money is coming out of my pocket.”
Freshman Jessica Medina also has doubts about the new system because of the points. Medina is on academic probation, which lowers her points and her chances of getting the room that she wants.
But the benefit of this system is so each resident will know who they will be living with and where they will be living by the end of the housing sign-up, officials said.
The housing sign-up process was changed based on last year's EBI (Educational Benchmarking Inc.) survey that on-campus residents filled out. If there are any questions concerning this new housing process, contact the Residence Life Office at 878-3000 or visit its Web site. Meetings can also be arranged with a residence hall director or resident assistant for more information. There are yellow fliers hanging in all dormitories and the library describing the new process.
