Eastman meets Weston in Rochester

By Sandra Kelly

The next day trip offered through the Burchfield-Penney Art Center will be on Saturday April 30 to Rochester to see the photography of Edward Weston, artist Wendell Castle and the interactive art exhibit The Paper Sculpture Show.

Wendy Huntington, the director of development at the Burchfield-Penney, said such day trips are offered a few times a year. In the past, the art center sponsored trips have traveled to Toronto to see art exhibits and they are currently planning a trip for late May to Chautauqua County.

The Rochester trip costs $80 for Burchfield-Penney members and $100 for non-members. However, non-members will receive a membership to the center, said Huntington.

The tour begins at the George Eastman House where Edward Weston's photography is on display, Huntington said.

The next stop is the Memorial Art Gallery. Lunch, which is included in the registration fee, will be served at Cutler's Restaurant. After lunch, the group will stay at the gallery to view the interactive art exhibit The Paper Sculpture , said Huntington.

Finally, the tour will end at Wendell Castle's studio where he will meet with the tour group, answer questions and allow the group to see his work in progress, said Huntington.

To register for the trip contact Mary Joy Buscemi at 878-4077.

Huntington said that this is a great opportunity for students, but because of the high cost many do not attend. She said she would like to plan a local tour that would be more affordable for students.

For some students the cost is the main thing preventing them from attending these events.

Sophomore Caitlin Jones said she would be interested in the tours, however, not for the price. She used to live in the Rochester area and would like to learn more about the local artists.

If there was a Buffalo tour for students she would definitely be interested in attending, she said.

Jen Stevener, a sophomore originally from Syracuse , also said she would be interested in the trips but, like Jones, cannot afford the price.

She would also be interested in the local tours to learn more about Buffalo and its history. Stevener would like to see the Frank Lloyd Wright houses.

Junior Tony Coppola would also enjoy the trips, but the cost is an issue. He said if they offered the local tours he would go.

“ Buffalo has some really cool sculptors and painters,” said Coppola.

He thinks that there should be more of a student and professor involvement with local arts.

Huntington feels the same about student involvement.

“We love student involvement. Anyway to get students involved is great,” she said.

She said she would be interested in having students, who have the time, to volunteer to help put together a local tour. She is also looking for students to help encourage and inform other students about the services offered through the Burchfield-Penney.

Huntington can be reached at 878-3907. Any student who has time and an interest in art is welcome to volunteer.
