Former professional boxer seeks a Buffalo State boxing club

Don Patterson, director of the Upward Bound Program at BSC, is now going through the introductory phases of starting a boxing club at BSC.

As a faculty member and a Buffalo State alumnus Patterson now runs a boxing program at the Northwestern Community Center on Lawn Avenue in Buffalo.

Patterson stresses that a Buffalo State boxing club would not just benefit potential boxers, but also anyone who just wants to start working out and getting into shape.

“Boxing is a great way to get into shape, and not everyone who joins the club would be competing against other clubs, some people could join just to work out and get into shape. If someone was interested in competing they could box in tournaments against other boxing clubs,” said Patterson.

Patterson has noticed some interest in the sport of boxing at BSC just by talking to a few students. Right now he is just trying to prove that there are a strong number of students interested in joining such a club. Patterson will hold a meeting for people interested in the club next semester.

Student Views?

“I watch boxing on TV, but I’ve never boxed anyone before,” said Josh Higgins, a sophomore at BSC.

Patterson explained that most people who join a college boxing club are people who at that particular time decided to get into shape and join a sport they have never participated in before.

“If there was a boxing club at BSC I would probably join just to get in shape and then later see if I would want to compete,” said Higgins.

He urges anyone interested in getting into shape and training with the Buffalo State boxing club to e-mail him your name and number at PATTERDA@buffalostate.edu.
