Buffalo State volunteers plants 2,000 daffodil bulbs

By Tereka Baltimore

Hope will again bloom in the spring, along with flowers planted by Buffalo State College students on Oct. 21.

That’s because student volunteers and staff planted 2,000 daffodil bulbs on the West Side that day, instead of the original Oct. 14 Community Service Day, due to unexpected mid-October snowstorm.

“Community Service Day is usually in the spring, but the coordinators decided to have it in the fall this year,” said Deb Bechtel administration assistant of Volunteer Service-Learning Center.

Volunteers were driven by six school buses to six different sites. At each site the volunteers helped clean up and picked up tree branches.

Students also replanted new plants and 2,000 daffodil bulbs around all six of the sites.

Three of the sites were located on the East Side and the other three were located on the West Side.

Community Service Site

  • Sycamore Block Club

  • CRUCIAL Human Services on Moselle Street

  • Broderick Park

  • Delaware Park

  • Johnson Park on Elmwood Avenue

Delaware Park was closed due to the damages from the snowstorm. Therefore, the volunteers who were assigned to the cleanup at Delaware Park went to Broderick Park instead.

Broderick Park gets a facelift

At Broderick Park volunteers pulled up the weeds that were surrounding the entrance sign, replanted six new plants and surrounded each plant with daffodil bulbs.

“Our goal is to create a new park area,” said Bechtel.

Each volunteer was supplied with a pair of gardener’s gloves, racks and hoes.

Because of the unexpected snowstorm that occurred Oct. 12, there were many trees and plants destroyed at all of the sites.

“Our annual Community Service Day is funded through six sponsors,” said Fred Howe, coordinator of Community Service Day.

Among Sponsors were

  • M&T Bank donated $1,500

  • Buffalo State College Auxiliary Services donated $1,100

  • Capital Management Services donated $2,000

Volunteer response

According to sophomore Aungalique Mack, community service is a great way to help students to get involved in their community.

“Our organization would like to do our part for the community. If we do not help others they will not want to help us,” said Shaina Bailey, a member of Omega Phi Beta Sorority Incorporated.

“Next year by May, we would like to have volunteers replant trees and various plants that were destroyed by the snowstorm,” said Howe.

Certificates of appreciation were awarded to the students who volunteered.
