Programs
The B.A. program enables students to concentrate in aquatic biology or biotechnology, or to develop a more individualized program under the integrative biology concentration. By taking appropriate courses from other departments, students also can prepare for admission to medical or veterinary school under the guidance of the college’s Pre-Health Advisory Committee.
The biology honors program (B.A.) is for students who have demonstrated high standards of achievement and the ability to work independently. Accepted students work with a faculty member on an honors project, which may be published in a professional journal or presented at a scientific conference. The B.S. program in secondary education leads to a New York State initial certification for teaching both biology and general science in grades 7–12. Students have the opportunity to extend their certification so that they can also teach grades 5–6. Faculty advisers help students schedule and choose the courses necessary to obtain the desired degree and certification. Science teachers are in high demand across the United States.
The biology minor is designed for students majoring in other departments who would like to develop an additional focus of study by completing a set of courses in biology. The minor can be customized to enable students to develop a specialty in a wide range of fields.
The biology master of arts (M.A.) program prepares students for advanced research, professional employment, or study at the Ph.D. level. The master of science in education (M.S.Ed.) grades 7–12 degree, and the postbaccalaureate teacher certification programs, are designed for biology teachers and others interested in biology education.
