Austin-Area Mussel Is a Big Discovery

Two transplanted Russians, wading the shallow waters of the Colorado River upstream from Austin, have discovered a significant population of a freshwater mussel known as Texas Fawnsfoot. Now working at Buffalo State College with husband, Alexander Karatayev, Lyubov Burlakova began her Texas mussel research when the pair were at Stephen F. Austin State University.

Buffalo State Takes a Slow But Intense Look at Turtles

“My own affection and appreciation for turtles grew out of an early experience,” writes Buffalo News columnist Gerry Rising. “Thus I was delighted to visit Ed Standora’s lab at Buffalo State College to learn about the work he and his graduate students Jacquie Walters and Andy Harrison are doing with spotted turtles here and diamondback terrapins in Barnegat Bay, New Jersey.”

Grant Goal in Sight for Buffalo State

Buffalo State College is getting closer to meeting a match-grant requirement that has brought new funds to the Art Conservation Department, thanks to a recent $75,000 grant from the Margaret L. Wendt Foundation. So far, the college has raised $790,000 of the $1 million it must raise as part of a $1.5 million matching grant agreement with the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.
