Charles E. Burchfield’s connection between his painting and his work as a wallpaper designer for Buffalo’s M. H. Birge & Sons Co. in the 1920s is firmly established in Heat Waves in a Swamp: The Paintings of Charles Burchfield, opening March 6 at the Burchfield Penney Art Center. The show has been heralded as the first major retrospective on the watercolorist in more than 20 years.

The assumption that Buffalo is the third-poorest city in the nation is a widely accepted “media sound bite” that simply isn’t true, said Buffalo State College associate professor of geography and planning Wende Mix during a poverty research workshop that was held last Friday at the Merriweather Library on Jefferson Avenue.
