How can I use iCalendar files?
The iCalendar (.ics) file format is an industry standard for sharing calendar and scheduling information. The benefit of calendar subscriptions: they allow you to keep up with events at Buffalo State College with minimal effort. If you're using an application such as Apple's iCal or Mozilla Calendar, you can subscribe to have your calendar updated automatically. You may also download individual events. See below for a list of supported applications.
What software do I need to subscribe to calendars?
To subscribe, you need a calendar application that supports the iCalendar standard. There are a number of calendar applications available for the three major operating systems:
Linux: KOrganizer, Kronolith, Mozilla Calendar, Novell Evolution, Sunbird
Macintosh: iCal, Mozilla Calendar, Sunbird
Windows: EventSherpa, Microsoft Works (Version 8 or higher), Mozilla Calendar, Sunbird, WinDates
How do I subscribe to a calendar using iCal/Mozilla Calendar?
Follow the steps below to subscribe
- Select a calendar from our list that you'd like to download
- Click on its "Subscribe (for iCal users)" link.
- If you're using iCal, it'll open automatically and ask you to confirm your subscribtion to the calendar you clicked on. Choose your subscription options and then click "Subscribe".
- If you're using Mozilla Calendar, the process will be slightly different, but basically the same.
That's all there is to it. You're now subscribed to the calendar you chose.

How do I subscribe using Netscape?
Netscape doesn't recognize the webcal protocol (webcal://) used to subscribe to calendars by default. By following the instructions below, you can configure Netscape so that it properly supports iCal. Internet Explorer must be used for this tip to work.
- Launch Internet Explorer.
- Go to Explorer > Preferences > Network. Select "Protocol Helpers".
- Click "Add...".
- In the field labeled "Helper for:" type "webcal".
- Click the "Choose Helper..." button. Navigate to your Applications folder and select iCal.
- Quit Internet Explorer.
- Launch Netscape.
That's all there is to it. You're now subscribed to the calendar you chose.
How do I subscribe using KDE Konqueror?
If you're using KDE's desktop environment with Konqueror (KDE's web browser) and Korganizer (part of KDE's PIM suite) installed, you can, by default, click on a Subscribe link (webcal://) and a temp copy of the Calendar will be downloaded and opened in Korganizer. It's also possible to preview a calendar in Korganizer without subscribing - just right click on a Subscribe link and choose "Preview in Korganizer". Alternately, if you wish to view calendars directly from Konqueror, just enable the embedded calendar viewer:
- Launch Konqueror.
- Go to Settings > Configure Konqueror
- Select "File Associations".
- Type "ics" in the "Find filename pattern:" field.
- Select "calendar".
- Click the "Embedding" tab.
- Check to make sure that "Show file in embedded viewer" is selected.
- Click "OK".
That's all there is to it. You're now subscribed to the calendar you chose.
