About the Center...

At the Center for Health and Social Research we are proud to be an integral component of Buffalo State College's efforts to provide students, staff, and faculty with exciting opportunities for intellectual development. Through a combination of external grants and the College's Scholarship Support Program, the Center works directly with faculty and students to investigate basic and applied research topics that are among the most pressing in today's society.

The Center is a leader in researching critical issues such as drunk driving, suicide, violence, substance abuse, and educational reforms. Access to new technology such as geographic information systems and computer-assisted telephone interviewing are mainstays of the strong methodological approaches used by the Center's projects. This type of work has resulted in a variety of publications, as well as a partnership with the New York State Coalition Against Sexual Assault (NYSCASA), and the development of a Risk Indicator Database for the Erie County Department of Health. The Center is also involved in international research on suicide prevention in the People's Republic of China as a partner with Dalian Medical University. Please browse through our website for additional information and examples of our projects. If you have an interest in any social or health research topic, feel free to contact the Center to investigate potential opportunities for further collaboration. To get an overview of the Center and its recent activities, you can also look through and print out a copy of the latest edition of our newsletter.

Your support is appreciated...

The academic programs housed within the School of Natural and Social Sciences, including those in the Center for Health and Social Research, actively seek to provide our students with the latest technologies and cutting edge, up-to-date intellectual experiences. To accomplish this goal, we depend upon the generosity of those who share our commitment to innovation and leadership in intellectual growth through discovery. Your donations support a wide array of opportunities for students in the Natural and Social Sciences -- from scholarships to internships, from equipment to travel. You can now use the college's new secure on-line giving section to make your tax deductible gift to the Center for Health and Social Research or another program in the School of Natural and Social Sciences (Visa and Mastercard accepted). Remember to select the scholarship or initiative of your choice in the "My Gift Designation" drop down menu. Thank you for your support!"

ECCPASA AwareNews Survey...

The Erie County Counsel for the Prevention of Alcohol and Substance Abuse (ECCPASA) is asking for your feedback to help improve its newsletter, AwareNews. Please take a few minutes to fill out and submit this brief survey before August 3.
  • The survey is a fillable and scrollable PDF that will open in your web browser when you click on this link.
  • To indicate your response to a question, click on the corresponding grayed answer area. If you need to change your response to a question, simply click on the new answer you prefer.
  • If you accidently answer a question that you intended to leave blank, you can go to the end of the form on page 2 and click on the 'Reset' button. However, this will also clear ALL of the other answers you have given, and so you will need to fill in all of the others again.
  • To respond to open-ended questions, click your mouse arrow in the grayed answer box. A cursor will then appear allowing you to type in your answer. Boxes are limited to 255 characters so please keep your answers brief.
  • Note that the number box for question 7 is filled with zeroes. To indicate an answer, highlight a '0' and type in the alternative number you prefer.
  • When you get to the end of the survey you can send your responses by clicking on the 'Submit' button. You will then receive a Thank You message, indicating that you can close the browser window.
  • WARNING -- If you are filling out this survey on a Macintosh, it is STRONGLY ADVISED that you use Safari, rather than Firefox or IE to view and submit the PDF.
Your participation can help make AwareNews better able to serve the Western New York community. For your convenience, this is the most recent edition.
