CENTER FOR EXCELLENCE IN URBAN AND RURAL EDUCATION

PROGRAMS

CEURE's Rural Task Force is made up of Buffalo State faculty and rural education professionals from the western New York region.  Its purpose is to build connections between Buffalo State and area rural schools/communities that will culminate in educational improvement.  In particular, members of the rural task force seek to help rural schools overcome structural disadvantages that accompany the rural condition in the twenty-first century, as well as build on the strengths inherent in rural lifeways.  Further, the task force seeks to function as a vehicle for helping rural schools and communities relate to one another in mutually beneficial ways, including ways that will increase community vitality and increase a sense of civic efficacy among both rural youth and adults.

A small team from each school in Genesee BOCES region attended a retreat designed to promote discussion and reflection focused on teaching and learning in rural western New York.  Key questions related to the educational endeavor in a rural locales were explored.  For example, what is it?  Does it differ from what exists in urban or suburban environments?  What should the relationship of a rural school be to its community?  Are there ways that each can help the other to increase the general vitality of both?  What might that look like—especially in light of the current demands for testing and accountability?  Follow up plans with individual schools are being formulated.
