The Department of Chemistry at Buffalo State College is dedicated to its goal of preparing students for careers in Chemistry, Forensic Chemistry and Secondary Education or for continuing education at the graduate school level. The department prides itself on the research and scholarship accomplishments of its faculty members and on the balance this brings to both its graduate and undergraduate programs.
The Chemistry Department consists of ten full time faculty members and five adjunct faculty and is located on the top floor of the Science Building at Buffalo State College. The department houses the necessary equipment to support a wide variety of research interests, as well as mechanical and woodworking shops and electronic repair facilities. The interests of the department cover a wide range of topics within the traditional fields of analytical, biochemical, inorganic, organic, physical chemistry and chemical education. Many of the ongoing projects are collaborative involving faculty of other departments, universities and laboratories.
Other activities within the department include our Thursday lunchtime Seminar Series and the Chemistry/Forensic Club for our students.
Graduate Program Announcement: M.S. in Forensic Science
Buffalo State’s graduate program, the Masters of Science in Forensic Science, is designed to provide advanced education in the science and laboratory methods utilized in a modern forensic laboratory. In addition, the program unites current theory and practices in forensic science with advanced laboratory training and an exploration of issues in the related disciplines of law enforcement and ethics. The 30-credit-hour program has been designed to be completed in two years. The curriculum for the program is structured around a core of advanced forensic science lecture and laboratory courses supplemented by electives in specialized sub-disciplines. The program will include a seminar component and will culminate in a master’s thesis based upon original scholarship carried out by the student. Faculty and Professionals in Forensic Chemistry B.S. and Forensic Science M.S.
The Department of Chemistry at Buffalo State College recently appointed eleven professors and professionals to our adjunct professors in M.S. in Forensic Science and B.S. in Forensic Chemistry. They are from Biology, Earth Science, and Art Conservation Department of Buffalo State College as well as School of Dental Medicine, University at Buffalo, Erie County Central Police Services, Erie County Medical Examiners Office, and Niagara County Sheriff's Office. These newly appointed adjunct professors are experts in various areas of forensic sciences such as toxicology, serology, DNA analysis, trace evidence analysis, and odontolgy. Our current and prospective students will benefit from their professional experience and expertise by conducting research with them.
