Professor Gareau teaches instructional technology courses to K-12 teachers in the Master’s of Educational Computing program. His current courses include Instructional Technologies (EDC 601), Authoring for Educators (EDC 604), and Networking for Educators (EDC 594).
Professor Gareau holds a Ph.D. in Education (Instructional Technology) from Mississippi State University, an M.A. in Educational Technology, an M.Sc. in Civil Engineering, and a Bachelor of Commerce degree. Before working in education, Professor Gareau worked for 12 years as a computer programmer/analyst in business and industry, and as a multimedia development project manager in a government environment. He has taught in graduate educational technology programs in North Carolina and Louisiana.
Professor Gareau’s research interests include: the use of creative thinking methods and tools in education; instructional media and their relative effectiveness for promoting learning; service learning approaches for teaching technology-oriented courses; the development and use of educational games; and Design-It-Yourself (DIY) approaches to educational technology.
Interactive Whiteboard Project:
Below is a link to Shaun Canaski's Master's Project Web site, where he describes the development and use of a portable interactive whiteboard using a Wii remote, an infrared whiteboard pen, Bluetooth wireless technology, a laptop computer, an LCD projector, and Smoothboard software. Shaun developed this system while taking the course EDC 594--"Educational Hardware and Software", during Spring 2009 semester. Students in the course, including Shaun, also developed the infrared whiteboard pens that go with this system.
