ITEC Scholarship Award

CIS Major Perri Jo Wilken was selected as one of two recipients of the $500 ITEC Scholarship for 2007-08.

Chapter Leader selected for WNY Chapter of Webgirls International

Ramona Santa Maria has been selected as Chapter Leader for the WNY chapter of Webgrrls International, promoting women’s interest and careers in technology.

Four new members were appointed to the CIS Advisory Board

The CIS Advisory Board is group of practicing IT professionals that meet to advise the department on industry trends.  New members include:  George Daumen, MIS Director, Walgreen Co.; Wayne Gage, Systems VP, M&T Bank; Rick Lesniak, Director of IT, UB; Ann Marie Steinberg, Assoc. Director of IT, People Inc.  Both George Daumen and Anne Marie Steinberg are CIS graduates.

Student Research Symposium Presentation

Three students in Sarbani Banerjee’s seminar on Data Mining gave presentations at the Student Research Symposium in Spring 2007. 

Web Development Panel Discussion

In February of 2007, the CIS department hosted a panel discussion, “Careers in Web Development”, featuring panelists from five different local web design and development companies.  Over 75 students from WNY colleges attended.  The event was co-hosted by InfoTech Niagara

BSC Young Alumni Achievement Award, CIS graduate

Holly (Meier) Hubert, class of 88

Holly started her career as a systems analyst for Carborundum. Then in 1992 she joined the FBI and in 1999 she established the Cybersquad unit of the Buffalo office. She is now a Supervising Special Agent and the director of the Computer Forensics lab. The CIS department recognized Holly for her the Young Alumni Achievement Award on September 28, 2007.

Administrative Computing Director Appointed

Computing and Technology Services is pleased to announce the appointment of Brendan Rooney as director of administrative computing. Rooney, a graduate of Buffalo State, has been a member of the Computing and Technology Services staff since 1996, and has served as interim director of administrative computing since October 2004. In his new role, Rooney is responsible for SABRE project development; Oracle database administration; and the development, integration, and maintenance of administrative systems and Web applications.

Student Accomplishments

Excellence  

Three CIS majors were recognized for Excellence in CIS at the May 2007 Commencement ceremonies : Chris Anderson, Joe Riggie, and Marquan Shaw.

Excellence in CIS winners for 2006  are David Kasinski and Albert A. Watson.

Winners of the Excellence in CIS Award for 2005 were Gary Greenia, Janine Hughes, Ray Nagel, Jeffrey Reed, and Debra Riservato.

CIS major Nalini Goolsarran was selected as one of six 2005 graduating seniors to receive the Chancellor's Award for Outstanding Undergraduate Student.

CIS major Kevin A. Reynolds, winner of a SUNY Chancellor's Award for Student Excellence and the President's Medal for Outstanding Undergraduate Student, gave the student address at the spring 2004 commencement ceremony. Kevin graduated with a perfect grade point average of 4.00. He served as vice president of the Information Processors Association, treasurer of the High-Performance Computing Club, and as president of the Student Technology Association.

Winners of Excellence in CIS Award for 2004 were Kevin Reynolds and Susan Weinheimer.  

During graduation ceremonies in May 2003, CIS major Sheetal Anand was recognized with the Chancellor's Award for Student Excellence, and CIS major Lori Stilwell received the Excellence in CIS Award.

Publications

Recent CIS graduate Eric Forgette published an article, "Oversubscribing Oracle Servers Using Solaris FSS," in the October 2005 issue of SysAdmin, a journal for Unix and Linux systems administrators. Eric is working as a Unix Systems Engineer for a transportation company in Richmond, VA.

Grants

Dr. Lin.  Research Foundation Incentive Grant "Electronic Commerce - A comparative study of some practices in the US and China."  Traveled to China to begin work on this grant.

Senior Personnel representative from the CIS Department in the Buffalo State College NSF S-Stem grant proposal to award scholarship money to students in the STEM departments.

Dr. N. Mazur. NSF STEP grant for increasing retention and encouraging recruitment of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) students.
