COLLEGE RELATIONS OFFICE

RECRUITMENT ADVERTISING

The College Relations Office is responsible for coordinating the production of recruitment (employment) print advertising for the college, and secures advertising space through Graystone, an advertising placement agency selected by SUNY. Graystone negotiates pricing and advertising space in publications on behalf of the college.

It usually takes a minimum of five to seven days for an ad to be developed, approved, and placed. Be aware of lead time for publication in journals and newspapers. This can be as long as two months for some publications. Departments generally pay for their own recruitment advertising, and advertisements are placed only upon receipt of a signed/approved Position Release/Recruitment Plan (PR/RP) form and an employee recruitment ad production sheet.

Recruitment ads are worded exactly as stated on the PR/RP form and placed in the exact publications listed on that form and are edited only for college editorial style or brevity.

Ads are charged by word count; lengthy position descriptions cost more to advertise. Departments that wish to save costs on recruitment advertising are advised to keep descriptions, minimum and preferred qualification language, etc., as brief as possible and to carefully consider the cost of advertising in various publications. For example, an ad that contains 150 words costs $1,100 (display ad) or $450 (line ad) to run in the Chronicle of Higher Education. The same ad costs $825 (display only available) to run in Diverse Issues in Higher Education or $900 to run as a display ad in the Buffalo News.[Examples only; 2007 pricing; costs subject to change.]

Advertising is billed against the account indicated on the employee recruitment ad production sheet signed by the search/department chair. College Relations does not place discipline, electronic, or Internet listserv advertisements; they must be placed by the department or search committee. Care must be taken to copy the exact wording for these ads from the approved PR/RP.
