Awards Recognizing
Student Achievement and Leadership
Buffalo State is proud to recognize student excellence. Each year, several prestigious awards are given to recognize outstanding academic achievement, community service, and leadership. The following are collegewide awards. Also, many individual programs, clubs, and organizations recognize the outstanding achievements of their student members.

President's Medal
The President's Medal for Outstanding Undergraduate Student is the highest Buffalo State award given to a graduating senior. This recipient accepts this award at Commencement and delivers the Baccalaureate Student Address. Nominees must have a minimum 3.50 GPA. Nominations are only by faculty or staff on behalf of a student. Complete nomination folders must be received in Academic and Student Affairs Office, Cleveland Hall 519, by Thursday, January 22, 2009.

SUNY Chancellor's Award for Student Excellence
The SUNY Chancellor's Award for Student Excellence is awarded to both graduating bachelor's students and graduate students. Students nominated for this award are selected by their campus selection committees. Nominees names are forwarded to the SUNY Chancellor for his selection. Recipients are honored at a reception in Albany in spring along with the other SUNY recipients. Buffalo State recipients are recognized also during the baccalaureate and master's Commencement ceremonies. Nominations are only by faculty or staff on behalf of a student. Complete nomination folders must be received in the Associate Vice President for Campus Life Office, Campbell Student Union 222, by Thursday, January 22, 2009.
Who's Who
For nearly 70 years, Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges has assisted in the tradition of furthering the aims of higher education by recognizing and rewarding academic excellence on a national level. Buffalo State is among the 1,900 institutions participating in this national program. As a lifetime benefit, students selected for inclusion in Who's Who are entitled to use a free reference/placement service when seeking post-graduate employment or fellowships.

Leadership Awards
The Mildred Keller Campbell Leadership Award is given annually to an undergraduate student for exemplary leadership. Undergraduate students who have completed a minimum of 24 credit hours, in additional to other criteria, are eligible for nomination.
The Minnie and Joe Engel Humanitarian Award recognizes a Buffalo State undergraduate student who has demonstrated personal character through altruism, volunteer service, and the giving of oneself to the campus and the larger community. In additional to other criteria, full-time undergraduate sophomores, juniors, and seniors are eligible for nomination.
The Outstanding Master's Thesis/Project Award recognizes outstanding research and applied work at the graduate level. Criteria and the nomination process is available at http://www.buffalostate.edu/graduateschool/awards.xml
Departmental Awards
Many departments across campus recognize their outstanding students with various achievement awards. Such awards given to graduating seniors and master's/C.A.S. students are listed in the Commencement program booklet when submitted by departments to the Academic and Student Affairs Office for publication.
