High School Students

Advice for High School Students

We welcome students into the Communication Department direct from high school. Entering freshmen may enroll in the Pre-Communication program as part of their admissions process.

The best way for high school students to prepare for study in the Buffalo State Communication Department is by taking a full complement of academic courses, with particular attention to writing. All of our majors are rooted in written communication, and students who have a solid grounding in writing have an advantage in our department.

Develop an Interest

High school students also should develop an interest in the world around them, since all of our programs deal in some with with news and current events. We also encourage incoming students to have some knowledge of a foreign language and exposure to another culture. Likewise, high school students should begin to develop a critical eye toward film, television, music, and other forms of mass communication and mass entertainment.

Participate

Finally, we encourage high school students to participate in activities at their schools. Obviously school newspapers and television productions are very useful to develop communication skills. Also valuable is your work in other clubs and organizations, sports, and student government -- any environment in which you can develop leadership and team skills.
