Department's American Indian Initiative Holds Round Table

Participants from throughout North American, including former Sen. Ben Nighthorse Campbell (R.-Colo), met at Buffalo State for the inaugural Buffalo Round Table. The gathering was sponsored by the American Indian Policy and Media Initiative, an activity of the Communication Department.

College President Muriel Howard greeted the participants in the day-long conference. Department Chair Ron Smith presented the results of a triple research project involving focus groups, a survey, and content analysis of statewide newspapers. The research was conducted by students in the COM 401 Communication Research class.

The conference was organized by R. Timothy Johnson and Dr. José Barreiro, adjunct faculty with the Communication Department and senior advisors on the initiative. The Communication Department has established the initiative to study the role of mainstream news media in covering issues of relevance to American Indians.
