Common Council
Students Greeted in Buffalo Common Council
Journalism students on a class field trip with Professor Bill Raffel received a round of applause by members of the Buffalo Common Council when they visited the council chambers to report on city government.
The 14 students were with the COM 302 Information Gathering class. At City Hall, they first met with Brian Meyer, a reporter with The Buffalo News and a part-time Journalism instructor at Buffalo State. Meyer showed the students the News' City Hall bureau and discussed the newspaper's news-gathering procedures involving city government.
The students then observed Common Council discussion and votes on a city noise ordinance and other quality-of-life issues, as well as a non-binding vote on membership on the city Control Board.
David Franczyk, the council president, introduced the class and started a round of applause. He mentioned Meyer's connection with the college and (in the practice of full disclosure) noted that his wife, Annemarie Franczyk, is a part-time Journalism lecturer in the department.
