Engel Scholarship

Com Student Receives Engel Scholarship

A sophomore in the Communication Studies major, Elizabeth Gerbush, has received the Estelle M. Engel Memorial Scholarship for Spring 2005. The $2,500 scholarship is used to offset tuition at Buffalo State.

Ms. Gerbush is from Buffalo, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Gerbush of Ashland Avenue and a 1999 graduate of the Park School. At Buffalo State, she is a member of the All College Honors Program.

The Engel scholarship is given each semester to an English or Communication student who excels in writing. Ms. Gerbush received the award from a field of five finalists, whose writing was evaluated by three faculty judges from the English and Communication departments.

Bernard Engel established the award in 1998 in memory of his wife, Estelle, who had a passion for writing. Estelle never had the opportunity to earn a college degree, but her husband established this scholarship so that today's students who share his wife's enthusiasm and talent for writing may be recognized for the ability.

Candidates for the award must have completed at least 45 credit hours and have at least one full year of school remaining, as well as a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0.
