Careers for Public Communication Majors
Public Communication prepares students for careers in a variety of areas. In the field of public relations, graduates work as specialists, coordinators, mangers, directors and vice presidents. Some work as independent consultants in the field and owners of their own agencies. Some work as generalists in public relations; others are involved in specialized areas such as employee relations, consumer relations, community relations, investor or donor relations, and special events. Additionally, some alumni work in media relations, crisis communications, and public opinion research.
In the field of advertising, graduates work in agencies in both the creative side and as account executives, media buyers, marketing researchers, and so on.
Related fields associated with the Public Communication major include fundraising, lobbying, public education, government affairs, public information, and human resources. Each of these fields shows significant growth potential, and starting salaries are among the higher than other communication-oriented careers.
Public Communication alumni can be found in all kinds of organizations. Some graduates are employed by for-profit corporations such as banks, stores and manufacturing companies. Others work with nonprofit corporations such as colleges and hospitals, charities, arts-oriented organizations, religious groups, and so on. Additionally, many alumni work in public relations or advertising agencies.
While many graduates choose to remain in Western New York, significant numbers of graduates work in the New York City metropolitan area and other cities throughout the state, as well as in many other states and foreign nations.
