Research by the American Indian Initiative

The American Indian Policy and Media Initiative at Buffalo State College has initiated a series of research-oriented activities, resulting in the following studies, reports and commentaries:

  • Research Report: The Cherokee-Freedmen Story: What the Media Saw. Content analysis of U.S. and international news media, both print and broadcast, on the citizenship vote within the Cherokee Nation, conducted by Project Director Ron Smith and published within one month of the vote. (March 2007)  Research Report (PDF, 150KB)
  • Research Commentary: Two Polls Show Media and Government Out of Step with the Public. Comparison of original research by the Initiative with a parallel poll by Zogby International, both dealing with public opinion about taxation on Indian land. The studies were specifically focused in New York State but have strong parallels throughout the country. From the Initiative's Shoot the Indian book. Research Commentary  (PDF, 2.25MB)
  • Research Report: Public Opinion on American Indians and Taxation Issues in Western New York. This three-part research project (focus groups, surveys, and content analysis) was coordinated by Communication Professors Marian Deutschman, Rik Whitaker and Ron Smith with students in the Communication Research class at Buffalo State.
