Alumni Networking Event
Communication Alumni Event Draws Enthusiastic Crowd
More than 40 enthusiastic Communication Department alums attended a networking reception held at Campus House, the college's faculty-staff club, last November.
Joined by faculty, staff and friends of the department, the mostly local alumni met to see old friends, reconnect with professors and re-energize the efforts of the Communication Alumni Chapter. Along with the Alumni Affairs Office, the chapter is looking into some exciting new initiatives, including a student mentoring program, speakers bureau and scholarship steering opportunities, as well as the formation of regional chapters across the country.
The student mentoring program would involve alums "adopting" students to help with career advice in particular communication fields, as well as guidance on making the transition from college to career.
The speakers bureau would provide professionals to guest lecture to student groups and classes on a variety of subjects and give students another real-world perspective on the practice of journalism, public communication and broadcast.
Student enrichment and scholarship steering opportunities would supplement the efforts of the department's Student Enrichment Committee to provide scholarships to worthy students. (Look for additional information in these pages on new scholarships the department has already procured and disbursed to its students.)
Additionally, a group is already forming to plan chapter events around Homecoming (Sept. 29, 1007). If you're interested, contact Kandis Fuller, APR, at Kandis.Fuller@univerahealthcare.com.
If you're interested in any of the other initiatives, would like to establish a regional chapter or have ideas for more chapter opportunities, please e-mail the Communication Department.
