Graduation Requirements

 

   All Buffalo State students must complete a minimum 120 credits to graduate.  The Communication Department has specific graduation requirements that may change the credit-hour minimum, especially for transfer students.

  • Major GPA: Students must have 2.6 or higher in the major to register for upper-division required for majors: COM 301, 302, 303, 302, 308, 312, 319, 322, 325, 328, 329, 336, 337, 338, 390,400, 401, 405, 418, 428, 429, 431, 432, 433, 434 and 450.
  • Upper Division courses: Completion of all four core courses is required before taking Upper-Division COM/SPC courses
    Exception: Juniors and seniors may seek permission to take a maximum of two 300-level courses if three core courses are completed and the student is enrolled in the fourth.
  • ACEJMC Accreditation: Non-COM courses: Students must have at least 80 credits that do not have the COM prefix (SPC Courses meet degree requirements but are not COM)
  • ACEJMC Accreditation: Liberal Arts & Science courses: Of the 80 non-COM credits, 65 must be Liberal Arts & Science credits.
    Definition:  All courses are LA&S except those with the following prefixes: BUS, CIS, CRJ, CTE, EDU, ENT, EXE, FST, FTT, HEW, HTR, NFS, SAF, SLP, SWK, TEC
    Exception: The following courses are designated as LA&S: BUS116, BUS327, CRJ101, EXE100, HTR100, NFS102/105/108, SLP101/102/210, SWK105/319

Department Standards

  • Minimum Grade: Lowest acceptable grade for a course applied to the major is C
  • Maximum Transfer Credits: The department accepts only 12 credits of lower-division courses from community colleges that are equivalent to COM100 Media Literacy, SPC103 Intro to Human Communication, SPC205 Intro to Oral Communication, COM210 Intro to Media Writing and COM215 Intro to Visual Communication.

  • Internship: No more than 3 credits of internships (COM 488) may be applied to the 120-credit graduation requirement. Extra internship credits are counted beyond the 120-credit minimum. Students may take internships without academic credit. The department requires 150 hours of supervised work for all internships, whether 1, 2 or 3 credits.
