Mental Health Awareness Week Spring 2012

The Counseling Center is hosting a Mental Health Awareness Week April 2-6, 2012.

  • Did you know that young adults 18-24 have the highest percentage of mental illness and the numbers are on the rise? Did you know that depression is a significant predictor of lower GPA and probability of dropping out of school?
  • Did you know that college counseling centers offer a unique opportunity to reach students and positively affect the rest of their lives?
  • Did you know that 2/3 of students don’t seek help and one of the main reasons is mental health stigma? We want to raise the voice of mental health awareness and decrease the stigma related to mental health issues and to receiving support!

A key component of this celebration is a presentation by guest speaker Margaret Bertram.  Margaret (Maggie) Bertram grew up in several small towns in central Illinois where everyone knew each other's business. She became a master at projecting confidence, maturity, and success while hiding her thoughts and feelings inside. Maggie's perfectionism and anxiety struggles began in high school and continued through college where she struggled with shame associated with discovering her lesbian identity, major depression, obsessive compulsive disorder, and anorexia nervosa.

Since her recovery, Maggie has navigated a path toward a more positive, integrated, and balanced life. She is a powerful speaker who engages audiences with her sincerity, humor, and remarkable intellect. Maggie is currently Program Manager for Student-Led Initiatives at Active Minds, Inc.
