I can't open a file on my floppy disk. Is there anything I can do?

If you can't open a file on your floppy disk, or if you get a message that the disk needs to be formatted, bring the disk to the Computing Help Desk in the Butler Library Information Commons. We have software that may be able to repair the disk and recover your files. We may be able to recover data from other media as well, such as CDs, USB disks, and zip disks. Please be aware, however, that there is no guarantee that we will be able to recover your files.   

Note: Since floppy disks are increasingly becoming obsolete, very few computers on campus are equipped with floppy drives in them. Therefore, you may want to transfer your data to a USB flash drive (or some other storage medium such as a CD). We strongly encourage using these devices instead of floppy disks, as floppies are highly susceptible to damage and don’t have a lot of storage space. One 128MB flash drive has the same storage capacity as 88 floppy disks. If you don't have one of these drives, you can purchase one at any computer store. You can also buy one for $20 at the Circulation Desk in Butler Library.

How do I backup files to my personal network folder? 

It is highly recommended that you make two copies of your work on two separate disks to protect your data. When working on campus, we strongly recommend backing up your important files to your personal share folder. All students receive 50 megabytes (MB) of network storage space to save files, which is equivalent to about 35 floppy disks. Our servers are backed up on a weekly basis, so there is a good chance we'll be able to restore a working copy of corrupt files or file that have been accidentally deleted. 

To save files directly to your personal network folder from a Microsoft Office application, follow the steps below: 

  1. Within any Microsoft application, select Save As from the File menu
  2. Select your Z: drive from the Save in drop-down list (see picture below)
  3. Create a name for your file in the File name box
  4. Click once on the Save button

 

To copy files from a removable disk (such as a floppy disk) to your network folder, follow these steps:

  1. Login to a campus computer and insert your disk into the drive
  2. Double-click the My Computer icon to open it (see picture below)
  3. Double-click the 3.5 Floppy (A:) drive (or the drive where you have your files saved)
  4. Select the files that you want to copy, and then select Copy from the Edit menu
  5. Click the Back button to return to the list of drives
  6. Double-click the Z: drive to open your network folder
  7. Select Paste from the Edit menu

Note: USB flash drives are quickly replacing floppy disks as the storage medium of choice among computer users. We strongly encourage using these devices instead of floppy disks, as floppies are highly susceptible to damage and don’t have a lot of storage space. How do I copy files and folders to CD in Windows XP?

CDs are an excellent storage medium for backing up your important data. We strongly encourage using CDs or USB flash drives instead of floppy disks, as floppies are highly susceptible to damage and don't have a lot of storage space. One blank CD-R disk can store up to 700MB of data, which is roughly equivalent to 485 floppy disks. Follow the instructions below to copy files and folders to CD using the built-in Windows XP CD recording software:
  1. Insert a blank recordable disk (CD-R) into the rewritable drive. If a dialog box appears, click Cancel
  2. Double-click My Computer and select the files and folders you want to copy to CD.
    • Tip: Hold down the CTRL key while you click to select multiple files and folders, or press CTRL+A to select all of the files and folders.
  3. With the files and folders selected, click one of the following options from the File and Folder Tasks bar:
    • Copy this file
    • Copy this folder
    • Copy the selected items
  4. When the Copy Items box opens, select the CD-RW drive, and click Copy. The You have files waiting to be written to the CD notification balloon appears. Click the balloon to see the files.

  5.        A list of Files Ready to Be Written to the CD is displayed. You’ll notice that the file icons are somewhat transparent (see picture). This means that they have not actually been written to the CD yet. Windows holds the files in a temporary folder on the hard drive until you are ready to burn the files to CD.

6.     Click Write these files to CD from the CD Writing Tasks bar on the left.

7.     When the CD Writing Wizard opens enter a name for the CD and click Next. The recording process will begin, and the files and folders you selected are written to the disk.  When the process is finished, the wizard will prompt you to create another CD containing the exact same files. If you do not wish to make multiple copies, click Finish.

How do I change my network/ANGEL password?

Protect your accounts, files, and other computer resources by periodically changing your Buffalo State password. To change a known password, visit the Password Change Utility. To learn how to reset a forgotten password, visit our Reset your student network password page. Your password should be as strong as possible - avoid using dictionary words, names of people you know, phone numbers or anything else that might easily be associated with you. Your password must be 6 to 14 characters long, and should contain a combination of upper/lower case letters, numbers, and special characters. Tip: You can use the Microsoft Password Checker to test the strength of your password.

Please Note: Your Banner PIN, Degree Navigator password and Student Gmail password are not connected to any other accounts, nor are they linked to each other. Your network and ANGEL accounts are the only ones that are linked. In other words, when you change your network password, this changes your password for campus computers and ANGEL ONLY! Your Degree Navigator and Student Gmail passwords, and your Banner PIN, will not be changed.

It is your responsibility to safeguard your accounts and passwords! Never share your passwords with anyone for any reason, and never logon to campus computers for someone else! Doing so violates the campus policy on the use of electronic resources. When I try to login to the library databases it says my username is incorrect. What should I do? 

If you get the error "your username or password was incorrect" when you try to login to the library databases, you are entering the wrong username or the wrong password. First, check Username Lookup to make sure you are entering the correct username, and then try logging in again. Also, make sure that you are using your Buffalo State network password to logon to the library databases. This is the same password you use to logon to ANGEL. When I try to login to ANGEL I get an error message. What should I do?

How you resolve this problem depends on the specific error message that you receive. There are three main login errors that users typically get from ANGEL. Refer to the list below to find out how to resolve:

  • Error 1: Authorization error – the logon information you entered is valid, but the account does not currently have permissions to use this site.


What This Means: This error means you do not have an account on ANGEL. If you just registered for a course that uses ANGEL, there is a two business day delay in getting access to ANGEL. The files from Banner need to catch up with ANGEL. If you are certain your course uses ANGEL, and you waited two full business days after registering, contact the Computing Help Desk (878-4357) and tell them you received the "authentication error" message. The Help Desk will create a service ticket to have your ANGEL account created.    

  • Error 2: Invalid Username.


What This Means: This error means that you have entered an invalid Buffalo State username. Go to the Username Lookup page and verify that you are using the correct username. Try logging in again.

  • Error 3: Invalid Password.


What This Means: This error means that you have entered the wrong password. Make sure you are using the same password that you use to logon to campus computers. Also, passwords are case sensitive, so make sure the cap lock is turned off and try logging in again. I saved a file on a lab computer and now it's gone. Where did it go?

Never, ever, ever save files on a lab computer! As soon as you log off, any files saved in the My Documents folder, on the Desktop, or somewhere else on a lab computer's hard drive (C:) will be automatically deleted. To prevent this from happening, make sure you save all of your files to a removable disk (floppy, CD, or USB) or to your personal network folder before you log off.

Can I FTP to my personal web folder from off campus? 

The answer is no, unless you major in CIS, Educational Computing or Technical Education. If you don't major in one of these subjects, you will have to be on campus to update your web folder. If you do major in one of these subjects, you can FTP to your personal web folder from off campus using the program WS_FTP. Can I access my personal share folder (Z: drive) from off campus?

No, you can't access your Z: drive from off campus. You must be on campus to access your Z: drive.

I don't have a web folder. How do I get one? 

Students can create and store a personal website in their student web folder. Your web folder is located in your personal network folder and is called “web” by default. If you don’t have a web folder, or if you mistakenly deleted it, you can recreate it by following these steps:

  1. Logon to a campus computer
  2. Open My Computer and double-click on your Z: drive
  3. Click File from the top menu, and select New > Folder. Name the new folder ‘web
  4. Right-click the web folder and select Properties from the menu 
  5. Click the Security tab
  6. Click the Add button, type the word ‘everyone,’ and click OK
  7. Select Everyone from the Groups or user names list
  8. In the Permissions for Everyone list, make sure there are checkmarks in the Allow column next to Read & Execute, List Folder Contents, and Read boxes, click OK

I can't get onto the Internet from my dorm computer. What should I do? 

Before you can access the Internet in your dorm room, or connect to the Buffalo State wireless network, you must first change your network/ANGEL password by following the steps on this page: http://www.buffalostate.edu/cts/networkreset.xml

How do I connect to the wireless network with my laptop?

Visit http://www.buffalostate.edu/cts/connecttowireless.xml for instructions on connecting to the Buffalo State wireless network. Also, visit http://www.buffalostate.edu/cts/wireless.xml for a list of wireless locations on campus..

How do I look up my Buffalo State username and Banner ID? 

You can look up your Buffalo State username and Banner ID at any time by following the steps below:

  1. Open Internet Explorer and go to: www.buffalostate.edu
  2. Click the Student E-mail link at the top of the page
  3. In the Passwords section, click the look up your username link 
  4. Enter the first 6 numbers of your social security number, first name and last name, and click Find

Note: If you get the message "sorry, the criteria you entered did not match any of our students," your accounts have not been created yet. If it has been at least three business days since paying your tuition deposit, and you still cannot login to Student E-mail or Banner, contact the Computing Help Desk (878-4357) for assistance.

What is the initial password for my Buffalo State accounts?

If you are new student, and have never logged into any of your Buffalo State accounts, refer to the chart below to see what the initial passwords are for each account:

Account Default Password
ANGEL DOB in MMDDYY format (change when NT password is changed)
Banner DOB in MMDDYY format (must change at first logon)
Degree Navigator First 6 digits of SS (cannot be changed)
Campus Logon (NT)  DOB in MMDDYY format (must change at first logon)
Student E-mail DOB in MMDDYY format (changed when NT password is changed)



Note: You can change a known password at any time from any computer by using the Password Reset Utility. Click here for information on changing your password. The Password Reset Utility will reset your password for the following accounts: NT, Student E-mail,  Linux and ANGEL (if applicable). Your Degree Navigator password and Banner PIN will not be changed.

When will my Student G-mail and Banner accounts be ready?

In general, you must wait at least three business days from the time your tuition deposit is paid/waived before your accounts are generated. Your Banner account may be created prior to this, however, if you are eligible for financial aid. If this is the case, you should receive a letter from the Financial Aid office with instructions for accessing your Banner account. You can use the Username Lookup utility to lookup your Buffalo State username and Banner ID. If your username and ID are displayed, you should be able to access Student G-mail and Banner. If you get the message "sorry, the criteria you entered did not match any of our students," your accounts have not been created yet. If you have waited at least three days and still cannot login to Student G-mail or Banner, contact the Computing Help Desk (878-4357) for assistance.

Can I check my grades online at the end of the semester? 

At the end of each semester, once the grading period has ended, grades will be accessible online using Degree Navigator. To access Degree Navigator, go to the Buffalo State homepage (www.buffalostate.edu), click the Degree Navigator link, and then click the Logon link. When you login, be sure to enter your username in lowercase, and to use the first 6 numbers of your Social Security numberfor the password. 

Note: Your Degree Navigator password CANNOT be changed. You will always use the first six numbers of your Social Security number to login. E-mail audit@buffalostate.edu or see your Academic Advisor if you have questions about the information found in Degree Navigator.

How long will my accounts remain active after leaving Buffalo State?

All student user accounts will remain active for two years (four semesters) after a student leaves/graduates from Buffalo State. Your student accounts will automatically expire after two years.

Why do I keep getting e-mail from Buffalo State?

Your Buffalo State e-mail account remains active for two years (four semesters) after you leave/graduate from Buffalo State. During this time, you will continue to receive announcements and other e-mail messages from the college. After two years, your e-mail account will automatically expire. If you had your Buffalo State e-mail forwarded to a different account when you were a student, you can login to your Buffalo State account and remove the forwarding.

Note: If you forgot your Student E-mail password, you will need to contact the Computing Help Desk (878-4357) to have your password reset. You must present a valid Buffalo State College ID card to receive assistance.

How do I login to my Linux account? 

Follow the steps below to logon to your Linux account on the bscacad2 server:

  1. Open a browser window and type telnet://bscacad2.buffalostate.edu in the address bar, press Enter
  2. When the telnet window opens (see picture), enter your Buffalo State username and password, press Enter
 


Note:
 Before logging into your Linux account you may need to change your Buffalo State password.If you followed the steps above but get the "invalid login" error, change your password, and then try logging in again. such the phone number for the Computing Help Desk (878-4357).

When I try to login to Linux it says my login is invalid. What should I do?

If you get the error "invalid login" when you try to login to your Linux account, first check Username Lookup to make sure you are entering the correct username. If you still can't login, try changing your Buffalo State password. To do this, follow the steps below:

  1. Go to the Password Reset Utility* page
  2. In the Username box, enter your Buffalo State username 
  3. In the Old Password box, enter your date of birth in MMDDYY format
  4. In the New Password box, create a new password which is at least 6 characters long
  5. In the Confirm New Password box, retype your new password
  6. Click the OK button to change your password

You should see a message that your password was successfully changed. If so, you should now be able to login to Linux. If not, you will need to contact the Computing Help Desk (878-4357) to have your password reset. You must present a valid Buffalo State College ID card to receive assistance.

*Note: Changing your Buffalo State password will affect the following campus systems - Campus Logon, E-Mail, ANGEL, Library Databases, Online Directories, and ResNet (Cisco Clean Access). Your Degree Navigator password and Banner PIN will not be changed.

How do I FTP to my personal web folder from off campus?

If you major in CIS, Educational Computing or Technical Education you can FTP to your personal web folder from off campus using the program WS_FTP.

Follow the steps below to download and install the WS_FTP program:

  1. Go to http://www.buffalostate.edu/cts/x540.xml 
  2. Click on the Download WsFTP link
  3. When prompted click Save and download the file to your Desktop
  4. Go to the Desktop and double-click the wsftple file to unzip the folder
  5. Double-click the wsftple.exe file to begin the installation and click Continue
  6. To open the program click Start > All Programs > WS_FTP > WS_FTP95 LE

Here is a screen shot of the Session Properties window you will see when you open the WS_FTP program:

 

Follow the steps below to configure your FTP connection in the Session Properties window:

  1. In the Host Name/Address box type bscstudent.buffalostate.edu
  2. In the Host Type box select Automatic detect from the drop-down list
  3. In the User ID box, type bsclogon\ followed by your Buffalo State username
  4. In the Password box, enter your password and click OK

Here is a screen shot of the FTP window that will appear when you logon. Notice that the left pane displays the files and folders on the "Local System" (this is your computer), and the right pane displays the files and folders on the "Remote Site" (this is your personal web folder). You will use this screen to upload files to and from your personal web folder. Follow the steps below to transfer your files:
 

 
  1. When you first logon to WS_FTP the default path that appears in the Local System pane is C:\Program Files\WS_FTP. Double-click the green arrow twice to move up to the root folder (C:\). 
  2. Next, double-click the folder icons until you locate the source folder (i.e. the folder where you have your web/HTML files saved). For example, if your files are saved in your My Documents folder, double-click Documents and Settings, followed by the folder with your name/username, followed by My Documents. If you go too far, simply double-click the green arrow to move back to the previous folder.    
  3. Once you locate the source folder, click once on the file that you want to transfer. To select multiple files, hold down the CTRL key as you click on the files. To select all of the files in the folder, click once on the top file, hold down the SHIFT key, and then click once on the bottom file. 
  4. From the Remote Site pane on the right, double-click the folder icons until you locate the destination folder (i.e. the folder that you want to upload your web/HTML files to). Again, if you go too far, use the green arrow to move back to the previous folder. To create a new subfolder in your web folder, click the MkDir button, type in a name for the folder, and click OK.  
  5. With the source files selected on the left (Local System), and the destination folder selected on the right (Remote Site), you are now ready to transfer your files. To do this, click on the --> button in the center of the window (between the two panes). After a few moments, depending on how large the files are that are being transferred, you should see the "transfer complete" confirmation appear in the status box at the bottom of the window.
  6. Repeat steps 1 through 5 to transfer additional files to your web folder. You can also transfer files in the opposite direction, that is, from the Remote Site to the Local System, by using the <-- button instead of the --> button. 

Note: To view your website, open a browser window and go to the following address: "http://bscstudent.buffalostate.edu/username/web." Remember to replace “username” in the address path above with your own NT username. When using a campus computer, save your web files to your web folder. If you have trouble logging in or using WS_FTP contact the Computing Help Desk (878-4357) for assistance.
