If you’re in an abusive relationship

If you are being abused, always remember:

  • You are not to blame for being battered or mistreated.
  • You are not the cause of your partner’s abusive behavior.
  • You deserve to be treated with respect.
  • You deserve a safe and happy life.
  • Your children deserve a safe and happy life.
  • You are not alone. There are people waiting to help.

What to do

  • Talk to someone you trust.  Even if you feel partly responsible, are reluctant to get someone else in  trouble, or fear retaliation there are many people at Buffalo State and in the community who can help you.   Some of them are listed on the Resources page.
  • Call a hotline for advice and referrals to support services -- 800-942-6906 (state hotline number)
  • Make sure your friends and/or family know where you are at all times.
  • Keep yourself safe … VIVA, Haven House, Crisis Services, or The Counseling Center can help you develop a safety plan.  Click here to see more resources
