Dr. Elizabeth Peña, Co-director
In 2004, Elizabeth joined the Buffalo State College Art Conservation Department as Director and Professor. With a B.A. in Classical Archaeology from the University of Michigan and M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from Boston University’s Department of Archaeology, Dr. Peña has been conducting archaeological research for over 15 years. She has worked in the Mediterranean region as well as throughout the northeastern United States.
Dr. Peña’s research interests include material culture theory, wampum and exchange systems, documentary archaeology, and women and gender in frontier contexts.

Ms. Dena Çirpili, Staff Conservator
Dena is a 2002 graduate of the Art Conservation Department at Buffalo State College specializing in ethnographic and archaeological objects. She has worked in conservation laboratories on archaeological excavations at Poggio Colla, Italy, and Gordion, Turkey. Currently, she works on-site at Old Fort Niagara in the conservation lab during the summer field seasons, supervising conservation interns and introducing archaeology students to conservation.
