| Summer Work Projects
During the summer months following the first and second years of training, students are strongly encouraged to find employment in conservation. The department serves as a clearinghouse for summer employment opportunities, bringing these to the attention of students. Students have been very successful in arranging their own summer positions to match their particular conservation interests and training needs. Faculty are also available to assist students with suggestions and contacts in the field. Below are examples of summer projects our students particpated in this year.

| Paige Isaacs works on the 'Kwoma Ceiling' |
 |
 |
This summer, Paige Isaacs is working at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York preparing the Oceanic collection for long term exhibition in the new Pacific Galleries opening in November 2007. Her main project has been working on the reinstallation of the 'Kwoma Ceiling', consisting of close to 300 uniquely painted panels originating from the bark of sago palm trees in Papua New Guinea. The panels are intended to be viewed together as a ceiling in men's initiation houses. In the past, these houses were burned after the ceremonies had concluded or sold individually to Europeans as artwork. These panels were commissioned by the Museum in the 1970s for display in the Rockefeller Wing which opened in the 1980s. The recent renovation of the galleries has allowed for a higher ceiling which is more comparable to how the panels should be viewed.
The above pictures show Paige and assistant conservator Amy Jones (from the Institute of Fine Arts, NYU) installing the first panel 25 feet in the air. The photo below shows Paige and Amy's progress so far. |
