Conference Banquet
After a full day of papers, we can all relax and sample local delicacies including wings and beef on weck at the conference banquet, only $30 ($20 for students!). The banquet will be held at the Pearl Street Grill & Brewery, a late 19th-century manufacturing building turned micro-brewery, located a nice walk or a short (and free) Metro Rail ride from the hotel (Fountain Plaza stop to Seneca stop). This restaurant is a local favorite in the historic Joseph Ellicott Historic Preservation District downtown. |

Book Room
We are planning a book exchange for the CNEHA book room. If you have duplicate volumes or are deaccessioning your library, consider bringing books to donate to the book exchange. At the meeting, please stop in the book room to adopt a book! For more information on this and other book room questions, please contact book room coordinators Don Smith (dsmith@panamconsultants.com) or Kathy Leacock (leacockh@buffalostate.edu). |

Old Fort Niagara |
The Martin House & Frederick Law Olmsted |
Lockport Locks Erie
Canal Cruise |
| Standing on a bluff above Lake Ontario not far from Niagara Falls, Old Fort Niagara has dominated the entrance to the Niagara River since 1726. The fort played an important role in the struggles of France, Great Britain, and the United States to control the Great Lakes region of North America, and also helped shape the destinies of the Iroquois and the nation of Canada.
Old Fort Niagara offers a unique collection of original military architecture and fortifications from the 18th and 19th Century, as well as living history events and programs, historical exhibits and collections, archaeology, and education.
This full day tour will include brief stops at various points of interest to the region's military history, but will focus on a visit to the site of Fort Niagara, including its archaeology/ collections care facility and new visitors' center. The tour might stop briefly at Niagara Falls. Transportation and lunch provided. Cost: $30 |
The Darwin D. Martin House Complex was Wright's most comprehensive residential design. In addition, the special relationship between Martin and Wright resulted in an unsurpassed wealth of correspondence on the design, making it the most completely documented Wright commission in existence.
Beginning in 1868, Frederick Law Olmsted and his partners created a series of parks and parkways for Buffalo that attracted national and international attention. His work for Buffalo occupied a prominent place in his influential career as park planner and urban reformer. Olmsted and his partner Calvert Vaux implemented a comprehensive series of parks and parkways in Buffalo that pioneered the concept of the metropolitan recreational system.
Enjoy a walking tour of Olmsted's "emerald necklace" landscape design in Buffalo followed by an in depth tour of Frank Lloyd Wright's Darwin Martin House Complex. This tour will begin at 1pm at the Martin House site. Cost: $15 |
Hand-dug to connect the Hudson River with the Niagara River, the 363-mile Erie Canal is truly a great engineering feat. Originally, 83 stone locks overcame the 571-foot difference in the level between the rivers. Enlarged in the early 1900's, now 35 locks allow larger vessels to travel across New York State.
Experience a unique 2-hour cruise which includes "locking through" and being raised the 49 ft. elevation of the Niagara Escarpment in the only double set of locks on the Erie Canal. You will pass under bridges that raise straight up, see water cascade over Lockport's famous "Flight of Five" 1840's locks, and travel through the solid walls of the "rock cut" as your captain describes the architecture, sights, and folklore along the way.
Transportation and lunch provided. Cost: $30
