EDC 690 Requirements

If you are contemplating enrolling in EDC 690 - Master's Project, please take note of what you need to do.

First, EDC 690 must be taken in your last semester of attendance, since it is the capstone course for the EDC program. For example, you cannot take EDC 690 in the summer and then come back and take additional coursework in the fall or later. However, while it is not advised, you can take other courses at the same time you are taking EDC 690.

Second, registration into EDC 690 is by instructor permission only. You will not be able to complete your registration in Banner until Dr. Thompson gives his OK. E-mail Dr. Thompson a 2-3 paragraph description of your proposed master’s project. Be as descriptive and as specific as possible on what you are proposing to do for a master's project in those 2-3 paragraphs. You might get a return e-mail with some questions and/or suggestions. Once your proposal is approved, you will be granted permission to enroll into the course. Then you have to go into Banner and register for the course.

If necessary, you can change your project after you are enrolled in the course. However, the later you change your topic, the less likely it is that you will complete your project on time.

EDC 690 typically begins with an initial face-to-face class meeting. The rest of the time you are doing your master’s project will consist of 1:1 office meetings, e-mails, and telephone conversations with Dr. Thompson.

Contact Dr. Thompson if you have any questions.

Essential Information for EDC Students

When Banner graduate registration starts be sure to get online ASAP that day in order to get the courses you need. Here are some important things to remember.

Students with initial (not provisional) teaching certification in areas other than elementary education and exceptional education who enter the EDC program must take 12 graduate credits in content knowledge in their certification area. This mandate is necessitated by the State Education Department and affects all teacher education graduate programs statewide.

Here are a few examples of the impact of the SED regulations:
• 12 credits in Biology for holders of Initial Certificate in Biology 7-12
• 12 credits in History, Geography, Political Science, etc., for holders of Initial Certificate in Social Studies.
If you have an Initial Certificate in an elementary education area or exceptional education, you are exempted from having to take 12 credits in your concentration area. Instead, you basically have 12 credits of graduate study to take. Consult with Dr. Thompson, EDC program advisory, for details.

Contact Dr. Thompson with any concerns or questions.
