What Students Are Really Doing on the Internet?

Description:
This presentation will offer a look into what students are doing at school and at home on the Internet. We will review the world of social networks like My Space and popular Web sites you need to be aware of as teachers. The workshop will address ways of protecting students at home and at school.

Brian Blaszak Bio:
Brian is a former high school and middle school English teacher and an I-SAFE certified trainer. Brian has been a technology integrator with the Model School’s Department at Erie 1 BOCES for the past two years. He is also the Technology Integrator for Kenmore-Town of Tonawanda Union Free School District #1. Brian presented the I-SAFE workshop at the 2006 WNED Conference.

Carmalita Bieniek Bio:
Carmalita is a former Elementary teacher and an I-SAFE certified trainer. Carmalita is a technology integrator with the Model School’s Department at Erie 1 BOCES and a Technology Integration Coordinator at Lewiston Porter Central School District in Niagara County. Carmalita has presented at NYSCATE 2006, WNED 2006 Conference, and T6 Conference in 2006.

Internet Safety – A Teacher’s Guide to the Internet

Description:
The program addresses dangers that put children at risk every time they go online. The topics discussed will include Online enticement, Access by children to pornography, Child pornography, and Cyberbullying. Other issues discussed are: e-mail, instant messaging, blogs and social networking sites, such as MySpace.com, and video networking sites, such as YouTube.com.

Cindy Bloch Bio:
Cindy Bloch has been employed by the NYS Division of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) Missing and Exploited Children Clearinghouse since June 2005. As a case April 22, 2007assistance to law enforcement agencies and parents, offering advice on case management practices, and developing child safety literature and programs. Cindy also lectures about missing children and Internet safety at professional conferences, DCJS sponsored criminal investigation courses and community sponsored programs.

A graduate of Empire State College with a BS in Community and Human Services, with a concentration in Criminal Justice, Cindy is also certified as a General Topics Instructor by the NYS Municipal Police Training Council. In 2006, she completed the nationally recognized Responding to Missing and Abducted Children course, in addition to the Protecting Children Online course, conducted by the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) and Fox Valley Technical College. Working in conjunction with the U.S. Department of Justice and the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, she is also a member of a work group charged with developing a strategy to count missing and exploited children at the national level.

Cindy is a recipient of the NYS DCJS 2006 Director’s Leadership Award in recognition of her contributions to Operation SAFE CHILD. She was a primary contributor to the development and implementation of the Missing Person Kiosk Project and was instrumental in developing the DCJS Internet Safety Program for parents and communities.

Be Smart-Get Smart-Use Smart

Description:
In this hands-on session, participants will take turns using the SMART brand interactive whiteboard. Participants will use the floating tools, the Notebook software and Ink Aware tools in Excel and Word. Advantages of using this tool in whole or small group instruction as well as a learning center will be discussed. Participants will be able to use most of the floating tools, create pages in the Notebook software, find items in the notebook gallery, use the screen capture tool to bring items into the Notebook software, and orient the whiteboard.

Tracy Bramwell Bio:
Tracy has been a technology integrator at Erie 1 BOCES for the past seven years. Besides working in hundreds of classrooms and districts, she has presented at several conferences. Most recently was the Buffalo State T6 conference last year (Higher Order Thinking Skills and PowerPoint) and a special presenter at a SchoolWires regional conference in State College PA (on the topic of WebQuests). She has also presented at NYSCATE, NY Talks for administrators.

This presentation will give participants an overview of various software and hardware solutions available to meet the needs of students with special needs. There will be demonstrations of hardware and software such as switches, touch screens, and text readers with scanning options. Samples of a variety of software solutions available on the market today will be shown. We will also explore the Product Finder Web resources.

Rich DeGlopper Bio:
Rich DeGlopper is an Adjunct Instructor for the Educational Computing program as well as the Elementary Education and Reading Departments at Buffalo State College. Rich has served as District Administrator for Technology K-12 in the Kenmore-Town of Tonawanda Union Free School District #1. As the director of technology program in the Kenmore-Town of Tonawanda Union Free School District #1, Rich coordinated the union of the administrative and instructional departments and oversaw the planning, development, and implementation of the district’s technology program. He has presented numerous times at the New York State Computers and Technology in Education Conference. He has also presented at Digital Camera workshops through Tool Factory and presented staff development courses for the Kenmore, Buffalo and West Seneca Teacher Centers.

He was also a featured speaker/trainer for Classroom Connect, and a United States Congressional Candidate. He has been a teacher and administrator at all levels of instruction and uses his experiences in education, business, and politics to sell, train, and create new and exciting programs for Interwrite Learning. Forever the fourth grade teacher, he understands the challenges faced by today’s educators, but he also sees the benefits that the Interwrite suite of interactive classroom products can have on instruction and academic performance today and for years to come.

Make a Podcast in Less than 2 Hours Start to Finish!

Description: This is interactive presentation where we will make a simple podcast-start to finish. You will learn and practice the simple steps to actually create your own podcast, which you will be able to take with you on a CD (or jump drive, if you bring one with you). Each participant will actually make a podcast which will include graphics, audio components, and music using Garageband and OSX computers.

Meg Wolinski Bio:

Meg has been a computer teacher in Orchard Park for the past 14 years. Prior to this, she spent 17 years in Buffalo Public Schools as a math teacher, computer teacher and Program Coordinator.

Digital Video Production for School News Shows and Class Projects

Join us for a presentation of Amherst Middle Schools Nationally Recognized Tech TV Program. Using Adobe’s (formerly Serious Magic) Visual Communicator software, students create “greenscreened” network new quality video projects, as well as broadcast live daily morning news shows. Within minutes students are ready to record their assembled projects while appearing in front of a green screen similar to weather newscasts and Hollywood movies. Most educators are surprised to learn how little it takes to get a high quality TV program started, as most schools already own the necessary equipment to work with visual communicator.

Rob Zdrojewski Bio:
Rod Zdrojewski has taught Technology Education at Amherst Middle School, Amherst, NY since 2001. His specialty is Digital Video/TV Production, and he most notably created the Amherst Tech TV program as a result of working with Adobe’s Visual Communicator software. Amherst Tech TV has garnered national recognition and now serves as a model school TV program for other schools through their Web site, AmherstTechTV.org. Zdrojewski has been selected as a contributing member of the Adobe Educational Leaders Program and offers advice and training for fellow educators getting involved in TV production with kids.
