On-Campus Housing
Are students guaranteed on-campus housing?
NSE campuses differ in the availability of on-campus housing. Some campuses require on-campus residence, others strongly encourage it, and several campuses have no on-campus housing. Consult the NSE Directory for information governing housing at each campus. (see NSE Handbook Sections 12.2.11 and 17.4)

Registration Process
How does a student register at the host campus?
Registration is usually accomplished by touch tone telephone, World Wide Web, or mail prior to arrival at the host campus. The priority time for registration varies from campus to campus. In few instances, students may register only after their arrival at the host campus. (see NSE Handbook Section 17.5)

Registration Priority
What priority for registration are students given?
Registration priorities are determined by the host campus. Approximately two-thirds of NSE members register NSE students at the same time as their own students. The remainder are equally split in putting NSE students ahead of their own or behind their own students in the registration timetable. NSE discourages the latter approach. (see NSE Handbook Section 17.5)

Course Access
Is a student guaranteed courses at the host campus?
Guarantees cannot be expected. Students should have flexibility for course needs when going on exchange. That may mean considering as many as two to three times the number of courses needed as options for exchange. Students are also expected to meet all appropriate course pre-requisites.

Student Fees
What kinds of fees will students be expected to pay to the host campus?
Plan A students will pay the in-state tuition and the same general fees as other students on the host campus. Plan B students will pay no tuition or general fees. Both groups will pay user fees for services such as laboratory courses, studio courses, or special events and activities. More and more campuses are also assessing technology fees. Refer to the NSE Directory and Campus Detail Information. (see NSE Handbook Section 12.1.4)

Health Concerns
Are students required to have physical exams and immunizations?
Most host campuses require some medical history for the exchange student and will accept a copy of the medical records of the home institution. Occasionally, a physical examination will be required. Most campuses require a record of immunizations prior to registration or enrollment.

Refunds
How are refunds handled?
Policies affecting refunds are tied to the institution to which the tuition/fees and/or room/meals have been paid. Home and host campuses may also have specific regulations for NSE students.

Orientation
Are campuses required to provide an orientation for students?
While not requiring an orientation, NSE strongly suggests that an initial meeting take place to allow the NSE students to meet one another and learn about policies and procedures which may govern their time at the host institution. On some campuses, NSE students are welcomed into all or part of regular campus orientation programs. (see NSE Handbook Sections 17.10 and 17.11)

Rules and Regulations
When a student is on exchange, whose rules and regulations apply?
Exchange students are obligated to the rules and regulations of their host campus. These regulations may be different from the home college or university. This may particularly affect academic standards; residence hall rules, regulations, and contractual obligations; financial obligations and payment deadlines; course registration and withdrawal schedules; and codes of social/behavioral conduct. Students must maintain satisfactory academic standards as defined by the host institution as well as those required by their home institution. Students must abide by the student conduct code of the host campus as well. Students not maintaining the required GPA or who are in violation of host campus policies may have their exchanges cancelled by either the home or the host institution. (see NSE Handbook Sections 12.1.7 and 17.14)

Financial Matters/Debts
How should outstanding financial obligations be resolved?
Home and host campuses are expected to work together to resolve debts incurred by students during their participation in the National Student Exchange. Failure to make full payment of all required fees or to resolve other debts to the home or host institutions may result in the cancellation of course registration or disenrollment at the host campus in the subsequent term or by the home institution following the period of exchange at the host campus. All financial obligations should be fulfilled to both home and host institutions prior to further enrollment, releasing transcripts, and/or awarding diplomas. (see NSE Handbook Section 12.1.8)

Residency at the Host Campus
Will time on exchange be sufficient to establish residency for tuition purposes at the host campus?
Residency for in-state tuition purposes is determined by the host campus. It is unlikely that time spent on exchange will meet state or institutional requirements to establish residency.
