ECONOMICS AND FINANCE DEPARTMENT

Citation Guide

  1. At the end of the term paper, the list of all the books, articles, references and sources used in any way in writing the term paper is compiled as a bibliography.b

  2. Include any sources that provided background, general knowledge, or ideas for the term paper, in addition to those books and articles that were paraphrased or from which quotes were taken. If in doubt, include it.

  3. The bibliography should follow one of the standard citation formats, like ASA, MLA or APA.  See Bibliography, Footnotes & Endnotes.  Handouts detailing each of these are available in Butler Library and online at Butler Library.

  4. Internet sources must always include a full address that someone else could use to locate the source,  followed by the date you accessed the site, not the date you are writing your paper.

  5. Most , but not all, professors prefer footnotes to endnotes. Ask! Remember, in ASA , MLA and APA styles, footnotes and endnotes are never used to report a citation. Citations are embedded in the text, surrounded by parentheses.
