The Global Book Project at Buffalo State seeks to promote family literacy and global understanding for Buffalo State students and Buffalo area community members.
The Global Book Project began in 2010 with the introduction of the Global Book Hour, a weekly interactive read aloud that integrates geography, vocabulary, music, art, food, and conversation between and among teacher candidates, children, and their families. Each week focuses on a different part of the world and all activities center on "travel" to this place. In this clinically rich field experience teacher candidates from a variety of disciplines work together to lead this university, business, community partnership. Hosted at local businesses, children and their families participate in the weekly activities and go home with the targeted book. Families can continue learning with the book through suggested activities that are made available at the weekly meeting and online.
Since its inception, the Global Book Project has expanded to promote global understanding through other creative activities including: Club HoLa, a children’s literature Spanish language club held one hour each week at Buffalo State for teacher candidates to build their experience and familiarity with the Spanish language, as well as opportunities for students to engage in international study and exchanges.
