BECOMING A TEACHER

ELEMENTARY EDUCATION AND READING

Are you ready to declare Elementary Education and Reading as your major?  Read this informational sheet:  I'm ready!

1. Apply to Undergraduate Admissions
Prospective first-year and transfer students interested in entering the childhood education programs at Buffalo State must apply through the Undergraduate Admissions Office.

2. The Pre-Elementary Education Major
The special “holding” major of Pre-Elementary Education (ELEW) has been established to help students planning to become part of the Elementary Education and Reading department move in the appropriate direction toward their goals.


3. The Elementary Education Major
Once you have completed the requirements for Pre-Elementary Education, you can apply to become one of the formal majors. You will
student teach, choose a concentration, take methods courses as a novice teacher, and become designated as a professional teacher when you complete your program and/or graduate, and are recommended for initial state certification. 

4. Graduation
Your bachelor’s degree allows you to be recommended to the state of New York for initial certification. 

5. Initial Certification
The Initial Certificate is the entry-level classroom teaching certificate in New York State, and is issued by the State for a specific subject and grade level. Three
certification exams and five seminars are required before you receive initial certification.

To teach in New York State, you must eventually hold a Professional Certificate. Teachers are expected to meet the requirements for a Professional Certificate by completing a master's (or higher) degree program.

6. Masters Degree
During your studies as a graduate student, you will be expected to file for candidacy and complete your
Graduate Project. Your master’s degree and teaching experience allow you to be recommended to the State of New York for professional certification.

7. Professional Certification
The Professional Certificate is the second-level classroom teaching certificate, and is issued by New York State. It is available to those who hold an Initial Certificate and have completed educational and experience requirements for the Professional Certificate, which includes a master’s degree related to teaching and three years teaching experience.
