Dr. Barbara T. Bontempo, recipient of the 2006 SUNY Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Teaching, received her Doctorate from Indiana University (1979), a Master of Science Degree from Purdue University (1970), and a Bachelor of Arts Degree from the University of Toronto (1965). Currently she is a full professor in the English Department at Buffalo State College and Coordinator of the English Education Program. She teaches Methods, Young Adult Literature, Research in the Teaching of English, Advanced Studies in Teaching English, as well as Ethnic American Literature and Futuristic Fiction. She is involved in all aspects of middle school and high school teacher preparation at Buffalo State College and has extensive experience in the supervision of student teachers, as well as in the implementation of public school/college partnerships.
Her areas of scholarship and research include young adult literature, creative drama, multicultural literature, peace education, and family literacy. Her publications appear in the NCTE journal, ALAN Review, the NCTE Standards Consensus Series: Teaching Literature in Middle School: Fiction (1996), and other professional journals including: The Leaflet, The English Record, Education, Contemporary Education, and Teaching K-12.
