Melvin J. Hoffman has a B.S. in English, an M.S. and Ph.D. in Linguistics, and an M.A. in Religious Studies. He has served as a linguistics consultant to the Chicago Board of Education. He has taught in-service classes for the Teacher-Corps Peace Corps, Buffalo Board of Education, and federal government. He teaches composition, linguistics, and biblical and classical literature.

(1970), and a Canisius College Religious Studies M.A. (1983). He has worked as dialect-survey field interviewer in Chicago, as Chicago Board of Education linguistic consultant, and as in-service class instructor for the Teacher-Corps Peace Corps, Buffalo Board of Education, and federal-government agencies. Major publication areas are compo-sition, applied linguistics related to Ebonics, and theoretical linguistics in English phonology, most recently, phonosymbolism. Minor publications are in epigraphy and non-verbal communication. He teaches composition, linguistics, and biblical and classical literature. He has been interviewed for newspaper articles, appeared on television, and written feature articles for the popular press.
