Jennifer Ryan received her M.A. and Ph.D. in English from the University of Iowa. Most recently she taught African-American literature and Gender & Women’s Studies at Grinnell College in Grinnell, IA. At Buffalo State, she teaches courses in American literature, particularly poetry. Her teaching and research interests include experimental poetics, African-American studies, the literature and culture of blues and jazz, and feminist theory. She has published articles on classic blues singer Bessie Smith and the Black Arts Movement, and is currently working on two projects: an analysis of the service-learning component she created in Grinnell College’s Introduction to GWS course and a study of the neo-slave narrative after Black Arts.
